Today’s middleware systems provide a deep and wide view into the mechanisms of lab instruments, analyzers, and automation. Utilizing available tools, middleware enables the lab director to assert greater control over routine processes, zero in on training gaps and lacking job aids, and truly monitor the entire laboratory workflow. This allows the director to be in tune with rhythms in the lab, observe trends and patterns, and predict potential problems when new tests or process changes are introduced.
Middleware continues to proliferate facilities of all sizes with another year of marked growth in facilities with 101-200 beds (up from 65% in 2022, and 56% in 2021).
Most labs are more than satisfied with middleware in use; 75% award the highest marks to their systems.

Of facilities looking to add new middleware, over half (55%) are eager to do so within the next 2 years.
While larger facilities are more likely to be implementing new middleware, it is encouraging to see growth plans from all sizes.
